A bit of History...

via ferratas seems to appear in the 19th century, when Austrian mountaineers installed equipment to facilitate access to some mountains. Shortly before the First World War, several "railway" routes were created by the Italian army to facilitate the way of army troops and the equipment they had to carry. It was in 1988 that the first via ferrata was developed in France, in the Hautes-Alpes. The practice has since become democratized and there are now more than a hundred in France.
